"Happy to share the speech of Prof. Dr. Frank Stangenberg Haverkamp, Chairman of the Executive Board of E. Merck KG & the Chairman of Merck Foundation Board of Trustees at Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary VC Summit 2020.

He said, "Welcome to the 8th edition of “Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary” under the patronage of the President of Zambia, H.E. Mr. EDGAR LUNGU and The First Lady of Zambia, H.E. Mrs. ESTHER LUNGU, we appreciate the eagerness to support our efforts to build healthcare capacity and improve access to equitable healthcare solutions in Zambia.
I particularly welcome their Excellency First ladies of Africa for their valuable participation as Guests of honors to discuss solutions and strategies to improve access to equitable and quality healthcare solutions and implement interventions to break the infertility stigma and support girl education as ambassadors of “Merck more than a Mother”.
It gives immense pleasure to meet you all with more than 2000 participants of healthcare workers, policy makers and media representative from 70 countries, today virtually during this difficult time of Covid-19 pandemic. Hope you and your family and countries are safe and healthy.

I would like to thank our partners from Ministers & health experts from around the world to join hands with us in order to realize Merck foundation’s vision Everyone in the world should lead a happy and fulfilling life”. I would like to greatly appreciate the valuable partnership that we have with all of you to build healthcare capacity and provide training to healthcare workers in many medical specialties even before the pandemic started, as this was and is still our strategy since 2012.

In our response to covid 19 pandemic, we focused on supporting livelihood of thousands of women & casual workers‘ families affected in more than 18 countries.
We started our online medical speciality training in 2020 by providing one year Diploma & two year Master degree from south Wales University and Queen University such as in Diabetes, Cardiovascular, Endocrinology, Sexual and reproductive medicines, Medical oncology, respiratory medicines and acute medicines. More than 1100 doctors from 42 countries in Africa, Asia & Latin America have benefited from Merck Foundation scholarship of specialty training which is an outstanding milestone in our mission to improve access to quality & equitable healthcare solutions in underserved communities.
In 2020, we enrolled more than 400 African doctors into these courses which make a significant impact in improving the quality of care for patients who suffered coronavirus. We have also started this year to provide scholarships for underserved but critical specialties in Africa such as: Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Mental Health, Orthopedic, Paediatric, Emergency Medicine, Dermatology, Neonatal Medicine, Pain Management, Psychiatry, Clinical Microbiology and infectious diseases, Ophthalmology, , Urology, Trauma & orthopedics.
I am personally proud of our online programs because it demonstrates Merck foundation’s concrete response to Coronavirus & it will significantly transform the healthcare landscape & will create a revolution in access to quality and equitable healthcare in general
Merck Foundation understood Africa ’s challenges and tried to address them properly; through programs such as Merck Cancer Access program which provides one year, two & three-year Oncology fellowship and master degree for more than 70 African doctors from 25 countries to increase the limited number of oncologists across Africa.
The "Merck more than a Mother“ the campaign has been kicked off in Africa in 2015 in partnership with The First ladies who became „Merck more than a Mother“ ambassadors calling for action to break the stigma around infertile women and empower them and to build fertility care capacity in their countries. Through this campaign in 35 countries, we have provided 180 doctors with Fertility specialists and embryology training programs and another 155 doctors with one-year diploma and two-year master degree of sexual and reproductive health from UK university which will improve women health in general and reproductive health in particular.
Other programs are focusing on building diabetes and hypertension care capacity in both Africa and Asia under Merck Diabetes Blue Points Program, with the aim to establish a strong platform of specialists. From 2016 till today more than 550 doctors from 37 countries are currently either graduated or undergoing this program.
More than 60 Doctors have been enrolled in One year diploma & 2 year master degree of respiratory medicines and Acute medicines to advance coronavirus patient care in Africa.
